New Danish Dining Chairs

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I didn’t even think we were in the market for new dining chairs as we really like the ones we have. But…..we went to the “White Elephant Sale” here in the Bay Area last weekend, and simply could not pass up this set of four Danish modern chairs. The mark on the bottom of each says they were designed by Kurt Ostervig, architect and made in Denmark by Brande Mobelindustrie. Another mark says the were imported by Gunnar Schwartz of Los Angeles.

They have those classic clean swooping lines, great burl wood.

The upholstery looks original and is a sage green tight vinyl basketweave pattern. Sage green just happens to be the color of the dining room walls, tying them in seamlessly. One seat does have white paint on it and a small but reparable crack in one brace underneath, but what do you expect for the price we got them at?

You really have to see these chairs from across the room, or this angle, to appreciate the beautiful "floating seat" construction.

Now our big question is whether to replace our dining room chairs with these! (see previous posts under “dining room”) We like the others, but these are pretty darn elegant. I imagine we’d keep the others, in storage for now, anyway. Then that begs another question; whether or not to replace our dining room table, which is a solid oak arts and crafts square table. It’s great, but to be honest, it kind of dwarfs these new chairs, and you know how Danish modern stuff is always lower than other furniture, so now our table feels too high. Of course, I’m just trying to rationalize getting a great “new” Danish modern table :) But what do you all think?
